What Is Soffit?

Soffit is the finished underside of a roof’s overhang, where the roof edge meets the exterior wall. It covers the framing and may include vents that let air move through the attic. Soffit can be made from wood, vinyl, aluminum, or fiber cement, and it often matches the siding or trim.

Key Takeaways About Soffit

  • Soffit sits beneath the roof overhang.
  • Vented panels support airflow through the attic.
  • Soffit is not the same as fascia.

How Soffit Works

Soffit panels close the open space under a roof overhang. The panels attach to the underside of the roof edge and connect with the exterior wall. This creates a finished surface that protects exposed framing from weather.

Some soffit panels have small vents. These openings allow air to enter the attic through the roof edge, while other attic vents release warm, damp air. Fascia sits along the outer face of the roof edge, so the two parts meet but serve different positions.

Painting depends on the soffit material and its condition. Wood may need cleaning, scraping, sanding, and primer before paint. Vinyl and aluminum need a clean surface and a coating suited to the material. Vents must stay open during preparation and painting.

From the Thomas J. Painting team

When we prepare soffit for an exterior painting project, we check the panels, seams, vents, and nearby fascia. We remove loose coating and surface dirt before applying compatible primer or paint. Our team keeps vent openings clear so the finished coating does not block airflow.

Soffit in Practice: A Real-World Example

A siding contractor may find faded wood soffit beneath a home’s roof overhang. The work may include surface preparation, spot repairs, and a new exterior coating that matches the siding and trim.
