What Is a Joist Hanger?

A joist hanger is a metal framing connector that supports the end of a floor or deck joist where the joist meets a beam, ledger, or rim board. The hanger wraps around the joist and transfers its load to the supporting frame through approved fasteners. It creates a strong, aligned connection.

Key Takeaways About Joist Hanger

  • Metal sides hold a joist in its planned position.
  • Fastener choice affects the connection's strength.
  • A joist hanger is not the same as a deck ledger.

How Joist Hanger Works

A joist hanger holds a joist end against a beam, ledger, or rim board. Its flanges sit against the supporting frame, while its seat carries the bottom of the joist. Fasteners pass through holes in the hanger and into the frame and joist.

The hanger size should match the joist dimensions and the framing layout. The connection needs the fasteners listed for that hanger type. A deck ledger may support many joists along a wall, while each hanger supports an individual joist end.

On a deck, the hanger helps keep joists level and spaced correctly. The surrounding frame still needs sound wood, proper alignment, and suitable flashing where the deck meets a building.

From the Thomas J. Painting team

When we work on a deck project, we check each joist hanger for fit, alignment, and secure attachment. We also look for bent metal, loose fasteners, and wood damage around the connection. Those checks help us identify framing concerns before surface work begins.

Joist Hanger in Practice: A Real-World Example

A deck layout places joists between a ledger and an outer beam. A joist hanger supports each joist end at the ledger, while the beam supports the opposite ends.
